Over 1 Million Food Boxes Delivered to Shielded Brits
More than 1 million essential food boxes have now been delivered to the most vulnerable people across England, Communities Secretary Robert Jenrick announced today (6 May 2020). Every week, over 290,000 boxes reach those shielding, with 330,000 sent out just last week alone.
Massive Effort on a Wartime Scale
Jenrick praised the army of food distributors, including Brakes and Bidfood, for getting packages directly to doorsteps. The government’s unprecedented shielding programme has teamed up with the food industry and local councils to deliver support on a scale not seen since World War II.
“The coronavirus emergency has brought uncertain and difficult times but the willingness of people to pull together and support those most in need is an inspiration to us all,” said Jenrick.
“This week, another significant milestone has been achieved with one million food packages delivered to those most at risk from the virus. This is an incredible achievement from this government programme’s standing start at the end of March.”
“I want to thank everyone involved, from delivery drivers to volunteers and council officials. Together, we’ll keep supporting the vulnerable for as long as needed.”
Food Industry Cheers ‘Huge Achievement’
Environment Secretary George Eustice added his thanks, saying:
“I would like to say a big thank you to Brakes and Bidfood for getting more than one million food parcels onto the doorsteps of those in need. It is an excellent achievement in such a short space of time.”
“The food and drink industry is working incredibly hard to support the most vulnerable at this time, but we know there’s more to do. We’re continuing to work closely with local authorities, charities and industry partners to help those still struggling to get essential food supplies.”
Protecting 2.1 Million Shielded Brits
Some 2.1 million people with severe health conditions have been asked to stay at home and shield from coronavirus. While many rely on family or friends, the government commits to supporting those without help for as long as needed.
