Prisoner Barricades Cell and Sets Fire in Fiery Protest
Blaze Erupts at Winchester Prison
Emergency services rushed to Winchester Prison last night after an inmate deliberately set fire to his cell. Firefighters from Station 1 and Eastleigh arrived at around 7pm to tackle the blaze at the Romsey Road facility.
Inmate Barricades Himself Inside
A prison insider revealed the defiant prisoner had stacked books and furniture against his cell door before igniting a fire. “He barricaded himself in and set fire to everything inside,” the source said.
Staff and Firefighters Act Fast
Fortunately, prison staff managed to get the inmate out safely and put out the flames before firefighters arrived. A Hampshire Fire and Rescue spokesman said: “When we got there, prison staff had already rescued the prisoner and extinguished the fire. We checked the cell thoroughly and left by 8pm.”
