Shock Exit: Speedway Captain Ditches Isle of Wight Warriors
Ben Hopwood Slams Door on Warriors
In a bombshell twist, Isle of Wight ‘Wightlink’ Warriors speedway captain Ben Hopwood has handed in a shock transfer request. The Manchester-born rider cited a new job making Island travel impossible, leaving club management reeling just before their clash with Eastbourne.
Warriors co-promoter Barry Bishop expressed his disappointment: “Ben’s decision came out of the blue. He’d always been asking if his job was secure and was doing well on the track. We were stunned to find out he’d been in talks with other clubs and speedway authorities before telling us.”
Despite the sour timing, Bishop confirmed, “There’s no bad blood. We wish him the best, but we’re disappointed how he handled it. Ben agreed to ride for 14 more days or until we secured a replacement.”
Alfie Bowtell Takes the Helm
Acting fast, the Warriors have snapped up promising Essex rider Alfie Bowtell on an impressive 6.55 average. At 21, Bowtell has ridden alongside Ben Morley at Lakeside for two seasons and is known for solid performances on the Island track.
Bishop welcomed the youngster warmly: “Alfie’s an improving talent who fits well with our squad. This signing gives us more points flexibility, and we’re exploring fresh opportunities now.”
Bowtell is set to debut tomorrow night against plymouth/" title="Plymouth" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Plymouth, with the line-up expected to be: Ben Morley, Danno Verge, Scott Campos, Chris Widman, Alfie Bowtell, Nick Laurence, and Shaun Tedham.
Warriors Face Plymouth Amid Opponent Woes
Plymouth will be scrambling without Bradley Andrews and former Warriors skipper James Cockle. Their side includes Richard Andrews, Henry Atkins, Macauley Leek, Adam Roynon, and Ryan Terry-Daley. The showdown promises fireworks as the Warriors look to bounce back.
Wightlink Wizards Aim for Revenge on Exeter
Later, the ‘Wightlink’ Wizards kick off their Southern Development League season at Smallbrook Stadium against Exeter Falcons. After a narrow 4-point loss in Devon on Friday, the home side is hungry for success.
The Wizards’ lineup features Island twins Morgan Williams and James Luckman, along with birthday boy Chris Watts and stand-in skipper Ben Ilsley. They’re ready to put on a show for loyal fans.
