RAC and British Gas Join Forces to Make EV Charging Cheaper and Easier
Smart Home EV Chargers Now Available with Expert Installation
Just weeks after launching its market-leading electric vehicle (EV) leasing website, the RAC has partnered with British Gas to offer smart 7kW home charge points installed by expert engineers. Customers can now take advantage of a bespoke electricity tariff with cheaper overnight charging.
Running an electric car just got cheaper and greener. The smart home chargers use excess renewable energy during off-peak hours, typically overnight, helping drivers save money and reduce their carbon footprint.
Top-Quality Chargers with Handy Hive App Control
RAC customers can pick between two models from Alfen, one of Europe’s top EV charger makers: the Eve S-Line Untethered (removable cable) starting at £659* and the Eve S-Line Tethered (fixed cable) from £745*. Both come with a three-year warranty and are installed by British Gas-trained specialists.
Drivers can control both chargers via the award-winning Hive app. The app shows if the car is charging and allows scheduling to tap into the cheapest overnight electricity rates. It also tracks daily, weekly, and yearly usage and spending.
Save Big with RAC-e Recharge Electric Car Tariff
The partnership includes access to the RAC-e Recharge Electric Car Tariff, slashing overnight charging costs to just 6p per kWh between midnight and 5am GMT. This smart scheduling could save drivers up to £300 a year on their electricity bills. Plus, British Gas backs this tariff with 100% renewable electricity.
Prices on this tariff can be fixed until 30 June 2023, and there’s no exit fee. Customers need a British Gas smart meter to track off-peak charging, which will be installed free if not already fitted.
RAC director of EVs Sarah Winward-Kotecha said: “We’re thrilled to team up with British Gas to make EV charging more affordable and hassle-free. By combining our EV leasing with smart home charge points and a tailored tariff, drivers get everything they need to switch to zero-emission motoring with peace of mind.”
British Gas portfolio director Americo Lenza added: “This partnership offers a unique all-in-one solution—car, charger, green energy, servicing, and breakdown cover. Supporting drivers to make the switch to electric with cost-effective options is vital. Once you’ve gone electric, you won’t go back.”
EV Leasing Made Simple with RAC and Hitachi Capital
Through a new deal with Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, the RAC offers affordable leases on popular EVs like the Nissan Leaf, Vauxhall Corsa-e, Peugeot e-2008, MG ZS Electric, and Mercedes-Benz EQC AMG Line.
Every new EV lease includes breakdown cover and road tax, with optional servicing and maintenance packages. Drivers just need to sort their own insurance. At lease end, customers can swap, return, or buy their car.
