Fire Breaks Out in Burgess Hill Market Place Car Park

Chaos hit Burgess Hill town centre on Thursday afternoon, March 16, as an underground electrical fire sparked in the Market Place car park. West Sussex Fire & Rescue Service confirmed the blaze on Twitter at 3 pm, highlighting that faulty underground cables were to blame.

Car Park Closed, Shopping Centre Stays Open

The fire service responded swiftly after reports came in at 12:34 pm. They dispatched one fire engine, and upon arrival, set up a safety cordon around the car park. Thankfully, the nearby shopping centre stayed open, with shoppers advised to use alternative parking on Station Road.

Emergency Teams Secure Scene and Hand Over to Utility Providers

Firefighters worked carefully with thermal imaging cameras to check for hidden flames. They left the scene at 3:14 pm once the threat was fully controlled. The incident was then handed over to UK Power Networks and Southern Gas Networks to fix the electrical faults.
