Island Speedway Stars Eye Vince Mapley Memorial Trophy Glory
This Thursday (17 May), Island speedway riders ditch team battles and chase individual fame at the annual Vince Mapley Memorial Trophy. The thrilling showdown takes place at the Andrew Younie Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde.
Delayed Start, But Ready to Roar
The event, originally slated to kick off the 2018 season back in April, was canned due to rubbish weather. But Warriors promoters quickly rescheduled, showing true dedication to keep the tradition alive. Co-promoter Barry Bishop paid tribute to Vince Mapley’s huge influence on him and fellow promotor Martin Widman when they brought speedway back to the Island in 2015/16.
“We owe a huge debt of gratitude to Vince and his family. They were so supportive of our plans. It’s only right we honour a man who inspired us both. Vince was a determined and dedicated speedway man. We’ve put together a line-up that reflects those values and expect another night of nail-biting, close-quarter racing,” said Bishop.
Who’s Hot? Ben 1 Eyes Trophy Hat-Trick
Home favourite and number one rider Ben 1 (pictured) is in scintillating form and starts as the clear bookies’ favourite. But beyond him, the competition is wide open. With a strong dozen riders battling it out, predicting the podium is anyone’s guess.
