Major Gas Leak and Car Crashes Shut Isle of Wight Road

Park Road in Wootton is shut tonight after a fractured gas main sparked a serious leak, combined with two separate car crashes in icy conditions.

Emergency Chaos on Park Road

The drama unfolded just after 10pm between Briddlesford Road and Lushington Hill. A mains gas pipe cracked, sending gas bubbling to the surface. Southern Gas Networks rushed to the scene alongside Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue crews.

Firefighters used cutting gear to free trapped passengers from two vehicles. Those injured were taken by ambulance to St Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

Second Smash Near Briddlesford Roundabout

Police were also busy dealing with another collision on the Briddlesford Road roundabout. A Ford Focus was left abandoned by the roadside, cordoned off with police tape. Luckily, no serious injuries are reported from that incident.
