Sprinklers Save Southampton Tower from Major Blaze
A fire in a Southampton tower block was quickly brought under control thanks to its retro-fitted sprinkler system, fire chiefs revealed this morning. Seven fire engines and 40 firefighters raced to Canberra Towers on International Way after a tumble dryer caught fire in a seventh-floor flat.
Sprinklers: The Silent Heroes
Rob Cole, Hampshire’s Head of Operations, praised the sprinklers for their crucial role. “The system kept the fire under control and stopped it from spreading, giving firefighters precious extra minutes to tackle the blaze safely,” he said. “Having sprinklers installed is like having a firefighter in every room.”
No Evacuations Needed Thanks to Sprinklers
Remarkably, no residents had to be evacuated, with the ‘stay put’ policy working perfectly. The fire was contained to the kitchen area where the sprinklers activated immediately, allowing the crews from Eastleigh, St Mary’s, Redbridge, Hamble, and Hightown to extinguish the flames efficiently.
The 24-storey block had recently undergone a retrofit to install these life-saving sprinklers, underlining the system’s vital importance in fire safety.
