Police officer charged with assault after trial by social media

A detective constable has been charged with common assault by beating following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC). DC Kevin Rowley, based at East Area Command Unit, was charged on Friday, 18 October via postal charge requisition to attend Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Monday, 11 November. He is currently on restricted duties. The Metropolitan Police Service made a referral to the IOPC following an arrest of a 17-year-old male in Heath Park Road, Romford, on suspicion of possession of class B drugs on Monday, 22 April. Footage of the incident then circulated on social media. The IOPC launched an independent investigation.
