Monster Cyclist Jailed for Rape Attacks in Greenwich
A man who terrorised two women in separate attacks across Greenwich has been found guilty of multiple rape offences. Alan Green, 39, from Thanington Court, SE9, was convicted at Woolwich Crown Court on Monday, 25 November.
Two Chilling Attacks on Lone Women
Green was found guilty of one count of digital penetration and one attempted rape from an incident on Blackheath Common in March this year. He was also convicted of three counts of rape and two counts of digital penetration in an attack near Tunnel Avenue in June.
Sentencing is set for 13 January 2020.
Sinister Attacks in Blackheath and Tunnel Avenue
- 9 March, Blackheath Common: A woman in her 50s was walking late at night when she spotted Green sitting on a bench with a bike nearby. Thinking nothing of it, she approached—but Green sprang up, pushed her to the ground, and tried to rape her before fleeing on his bike. The terrified victim fought back to get her bag and reported the attack to police after arriving at work.
- 2 June, Tunnel Avenue: A woman in her 20s, on a phone call near a footbridge, noticed a man passing by and then doubling back suspiciously. She was grabbed and dragged into bushes, where Green raped her three times. He escaped on his bike, but the victim managed to go home and alert police.
Investigation Leads to Arrest
Police launched a thorough investigation and identified Green through forensic evidence. He was arrested at his home on 19 June. During questioning, he refused to comment.
“These two women were just going about their daily lives when they were subjected to the most horrendous ordeals,” said Detective Constable Andrew Sumpter. “Green is an opportunistic monster and a coward who denied his actions, forcing the victims to relive their trauma during the court process.”
“Their bravery has been nothing short of astonishing. Thanks to their strength and the hard work of the entire investigation team, justice has been served. I hope Green now faces a very long time behind bars.”
