Armed Police Shoot Dead Dog After Brutal Attacks on Isle of Wight
Armed officers on the Isle of Wight were forced to shoot dead a dangerous dog after it savagely attacked two people at a Sandown property last Sunday evening.
Chaos Erupts at Sandown Home
Just after 10pm, police paramedics and armed officers rushed to The Fairway following reports of a vicious dog mauling two victims. The animal, described as a Staffordshire terrier and Mastiff cross, first attacked its owner – a woman in her 40s – leaving her with serious, potentially life-changing injuries.
A man in his 20s, known to the owner, was also mauled. He was rushed to hospital with severe wounds and later moved to a specialist mainland facility for treatment.
Dog Put Down to Protect Public
Due to the severity of the attack and risk to public safety, armed police were deployed and made the tough call to destroy the dog at the scene.
Inspector Matt Moss from Hampshire Police said: “We understand the circumstances will be incredibly distressing for the public, but please be reassured that it is very rare for our officers to have to deal with an incident of this nature.”
“The dog involved did have to be destroyed at the scene by attending officers. We do not take these sorts of decisions lightly, and we are confident that this was absolutely necessary in the circumstances to protect the wider public, due to the threat that the dog posed.”
“The two injured people remain in hospital at this time and our enquiries remain ongoing to establish how this incident happened.”
“We would like to thank the two members of the public who stopped at the scene in their vehicle to assist the two injured people prior to the arrival of emergency services. Thankfully they were unharmed, and their actions may have prevented the dog from causing further injuries.”
Ongoing Investigation
Police continue to investigate how the terrifying attack unfolded, reassuring locals that cases like this are extremely rare. Meanwhile, the community is left shaken by the brutal incident.
