Drink-Driver Who Killed Woman and Mocked Her Injuries Jailed for Nine Years

An uninsured drink driver who fatally injured a young woman and shockingly claimed she was faking her injuries has been sentenced to nine years in prison.

Crash Caught on CCTV: Driver Four Times Over Limit

Godwin Ohue, 40, was more than four times over the legal drink drive limit when he smashed into another car in Dartford back in June 2019.

The collision on East Hill happened just before midnight on 28 June. CCTV footage shows a Vauxhall Meriva doing a three-point turn on a quiet, well-lit road. Suddenly, Ohue’s car sped into the side of the vehicle, shunting it 14 metres sideways.

Forensic experts later revealed Ohue was driving at nearly 50mph in a 30mph zone at the moment of impact.

Victim Dies at Scene as Drunk Driver Denies Responsibility

Twenty-year-old Darcy Bruce-Lawrence, a passenger in the car, died at the scene from fatal injuries. The driver suffered serious injuries needing urgent hospital treatment.

Witnesses say Ohue repeatedly insisted Darcy was pretending to be hurt and even tried to film medics as they desperately tried to save her life. Officers had to pull him away for interfering at the scene.

Police Condemn Ohue’s “Selfish and Reckless” Actions

Ohue, from Greenhithe, admitted causing death by careless driving while over the drink drive limit, and causing death while uninsured. He was sentenced at Woolwich Crown Court on 27 August 2020.

After his arrest, he blew 150 micrograms of alcohol per 100ml of breath—over four times the 35 microgram legal limit.

“Ohue’s selfish and exceptionally reckless decision to drive while drunk has needlessly robbed a young woman of her life – and her family of a future together,” said Police Constable Darren Chapman.

“His behaviour after the collision was beyond appalling and has caused endless grief and pain to those who knew Darcy. I hope this case makes others think twice before drinking and driving.”
