Wiltshire Police Crack Down on Road Dangers in Project EDWARD Week

Wiltshire Police are ramping up road safety this week (14-18 September) as part of the national Project EDWARD campaign—Every Day Without A Road Death. Officers are targeting the county’s most dangerous roads with tough enforcement and vital education to protect drivers and pedestrians alike.

Focus on Fatal Four Drivers’ Killers

The crackdown zeroes in on the “fatal four” killers on the road:

  • Speeding
  • Using a mobile phone while driving
  • Not wearing a seatbelt
  • Drink or drug driving

Wiltshire’s Roads Policing Team is running daily operations on known trouble spots, determined to cut down serious injuries and death.

High-Speed Busts and Drug Driving Arrests

On Tuesday morning, officers camped out on the A303—the county’s deadliest road—between 8.30am and 10.30am. They arrested a 40-year-old man suspected of driving under the influence and possession of cannabis. He’s now released under investigation.

In that short window, police issued 10 speeding notices, clocking a maximum of 110mph. Two motorists were fined for using phones behind the wheel. Two vehicles were seized because drivers lacked licences. Several others received warnings and safety advice.

Police Warn: Fatal Four Costs Lives

“Action weeks like this highlight critical safety messages,” said A/PS Ben Cox of the Roads Policing Unit. “Too often we stop drivers speeding, using phones, not buckling up or driving impaired. These behaviours massively increase fatal accident risks, devastating victims, families and communities.”

He added: “By targeting hotspots with education and enforcement, we aim to save lives and make Wiltshire’s roads safer for all road users, including cyclists and pedestrians.”

Virtual Road-Trip Drives Home Safety Message

Project EDWARD continues beyond enforcement with a virtual road-trip highlighting road safety experts and organisations. This Friday (18 September), the tour stops at FleetCheck’s Malmesbury HQ to explore how fleet management software can help reduce road risks for commercial drivers.
