Bonfire Night Set to Explode in Back Gardens Across the UK

With less than two weeks to go until Bonfire Night on November 5th, this year’s celebrations promise to be bigger and louder than ever—right in your own backyard!

As public firework displays and large gatherings get the chop, families are snapping up firework display packs to create their own dazzling shows at home. Sales have rocketed in the run-up to Guy Fawkes Night, and experts expect the boom to continue well into the following week, especially since this year’s bonfire falls on a Thursday.

Pop-Up Firework Shops Appear Nationwide

With big events off the table, firework sellers have popped up all over the UK to meet soaring demand. Market leaders know that punters can’t hit public shows, so they’re rolling out the sparkle for DIY backyard displays.

Emergency Services Brace for Busiest Night Yet

But beware: emergency crews are preparing for a hectic night. More amateur firework users means more potential accidents. The law is crystal clear:

  • You must be 18 or older to buy adult fireworks (Categories 2 and 3).
  • Category 4 fireworks are for professionals only.
  • No fireworks between 11pm and 7am—except on certain special nights like Bonfire Night (midnight cutoff), New Year’s Day, Diwali, and Chinese New Year (1am cutoff).
  • Fireworks cannot be set off in public streets or places.

You can buy fireworks (including sparklers) from registered sellers only these periods:

  • 15 October to 10 November
  • 26 to 31 December
  • Three days before Diwali and Chinese New Year

At other times, only licensed shops are allowed to sell fireworks for private use.

Legal Risks and Animal Welfare

Watch yourself – selling or using fireworks illegally can land you a £5,000 fine and up to six months in prison. On-the-spot fines of £90 are also common.

Under the Animal Welfare Act 2006, causing unnecessary suffering to animals, including setting off fireworks too close to livestock or horses, is prohibited. Those planning rural displays must warn neighbouring farmers in advance to keep animals safe from distress.

So gear up, but stay safe and legal this Bonfire Night. Make your garden the place to be – with a bang!
