Boris Johnson Sounds Serious: Vaccine Approval Isn’t the End

Despite the green light for the Pfizer/BioNTech jab, Prime Minister Boris Johnson warned Brits not to get “carried away with over optimism.” He stressed: “This does not mean our struggle is over.” Tough restrictions remain in many parts of the UK.

Johnson admitted the vaccine rollout faces “immense logistical challenges” and that protecting vulnerable groups will be tricky. “Until the vaccine is deployed our plan relies on all of us making sacrifices,” he said at a Downing Street briefing.

Top Docs Urge Patience: ‘It’s Months, Not Weeks’

England’s Deputy Chief Medical Officer Jonathan Van-Tam urged the public to stay “patient and realistic” about vaccine rollouts. “It’s going to take months, not weeks,” he warned, adding he felt emotional as the UK became the first country to approve the Pfizer jab.

“If we relax too soon it will create a tidal wave of infections.” – Prof Jonathan Van-Tam

Van-Tam warned that social distancing must stay in place. “I don’t think we are going to eradicate coronavirus ever. It’s going to be with humankind forever,” he added.

Europe’s Vaccine Race: Germany’s Slow March

While the UK races ahead, Germany faces a lengthy vaccine campaign. The head of Germany’s vaccine panel, Thomas Mertens, told the Rheinische Post it could take until 2022 to vaccinate the entire population due to capacity limits.

“If you can administer shots to 150,000–200,000 people a day, five or six days a week… it would take around 100 days to vaccinate 15 million people,” Mertens explained. Germany is rapidly preparing vaccination centres to begin jab rollout once European regulators approve a vaccine.
