Wildfire Rages Near Horsham – Firefighters Battle Blaze Through the Night

A fierce wildfire broke out on Saturday evening (April 19) in a wooded area off Denne Road, Horsham. Fire crews scrambled as multiple 999 calls flooded in shortly after 5.16pm, sparking an urgent response from West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service.

Massive Firefight: Four Hectares Burnt

Firefighters rushed to the scene with three fire engines, a water carrier, and two off-road vehicles. The severity called in a wildfire tactical advisor to assist. Flames tore through roughly four hectares of dry undergrowth on challenging, uneven terrain.

Brave crews prevented the fire from reaching two nearby homes, limiting damage. A spokesperson said:

“Firefighters worked into the evening using jets and beaters. Relief teams arrived overnight to dampen hotspots detected by thermal imaging cameras. They tackled around ten deep-seated fires beneath the surface.”

Public Told to Steer Clear Amid Ongoing Dangers

Firefighters remain at the scene as of Sunday morning, vigilantly monitoring and snuffing out lingering flames. The public has been urged to avoid the area while the operation continues.

Authorities warn that dry spring weather has heightened wildfire risks across the region, especially during the busy bank holiday weekend.

Fire Safety: Stay Alert to Prevent Disaster

West Sussex Fire Service reminds the public to:

  • Never discard cigarettes or burning materials on dry ground.
  • Keep lighters and matches away from children.
  • Use only designated barbecue areas.
  • Properly dispose of glass bottles and rubbish.

“If you see signs of a fire, dial 999 immediately,” the spokesperson warned.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. No injuries have been reported so far.
