Raped Woman’s Attacker Finally Jailed After Extradition Drama
Constantin Lascar, 30, has been flown back from Romania to the UK to start a 10-year prison sentence for rape. His conviction came after a four-day trial at Guildford Crown Court in November 2020 — but he was originally absent, having fled abroad.
Police Hunt Ends with Extradition
Lascar was caught thanks to determined work by Surrey Police and the Crown Prosecution Service. After being traced and arrested by Romanian authorities, he was extradited and returned to the UK on Thursday 18 February to face justice.
Horrific Crime at Guildford Hotel
The horrific attack happened in the early hours of 25 August 2018 at the Mandolay Hotel, Guildford. Lascar plied the victim with alcohol before taking her to a hotel room and raping her.
He was arrested and interviewed three times, ultimately charged in January 2020, but failed to return for his trial, forcing the court to sentence him in his absence.
Top Cop Hails Team’s Persistence
“This has been a lengthy and protracted investigation,” said Detective Chief Inspector Adam Tatton from Surrey Police’s Sexual Offences Investigation Team. “Despite complications with the defendant not returning for trial, my team worked closely with the Crown Prosecution Service and Romanian police to bring him back and ensure he serves his sentence.”
“Lascar deliberately got the victim drunk to prey on her vulnerability. This behaviour cannot be tolerated. I commend the victim for her bravery and hope this conviction helps her find some peace.”
Lascar’s return and immediate imprisonment sends a strong message: no matter where offenders run, UK authorities will hunt them down and deliver justice.
