Three Ipswich Burglars Caught and Jailed After Terrorising Elderly Victim
Three men from Ipswich have pleaded guilty to a terrifying early-morning burglary that shook a vulnerable man in his 60s. The break-in happened around 5:45am on Saturday, 13 June last year at a home on Neath Drive.
Knife Threats and Boiling Water Horror
The trio forced their way into the house, waking the occupant and threatening him with a knife and boiling water. They demanded his bank card PIN before stealing the card, a large sum of cash, and jewellery — including two precious gold rings belonging to the victim’s late mother and wife.
Remarkably, the victim was left shaken but unharmed. The stolen bank card was soon used to withdraw cash at a nearby cashpoint.
Quick Police Action Leads to Arrests and Convictions
- Daniel Tovey, 36, of Marigold Avenue
- Glynn Davis, 37, of Springhurst Close
- William Hutchinson, 48, of Norwich Road
All three men were arrested on the same day and held at Martlesham Police Investigation Centre.
Forensic evidence sealed their fate: footprints, fingerprints, and DNA on the knife linked them to the scene. Phone data further confirmed their involvement.
On 24 May 2021 at Ipswich Crown Court, the men pleaded guilty to burglary.
Heavy Sentences for a Callous Crime
- Glynn Davis: 6 years in prison
- William Hutchinson: 6 years in prison
- Daniel Tovey: 5 years and 5 months in prison
Detective Constable Leia Dowsing said: “This was an extremely alarming experience for a vulnerable man living alone. The offenders used aggressive verbal threats and physical intimidation in his own home.”
She added: “The victim was also devastated when two gold rings of great sentimental value were snatched from his fingers. Thankfully, some items including those rings were later recovered.”
The Serious Crime Disruption Team praised the victim’s bravery and witness support, which were crucial in securing the convictions. The team focuses on tackling serious organised crime, including drug supply and violent burglaries.
