Flame-thrower Samantha Bond sparks chaos with cigarette lighter in shared flat
Samantha Bond, 24, set fire to her bed and sheets in a shared house, causing a £1,000 blaze that could have ended in tragedy. The reckless arson attack took place on 11 August 2021, but Bond’s sentencing only came on 8 February at Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court.
Blazing bed leaves room wrecked
Bond used a cigarette lighter to torch her bedding in the Snow Hill, Shelton residence. The fire quickly melted the carpet and destroyed the bed frame. Alarmingly, Bond put out the flames herself by smothering the fire with her bare hands.
Neighbours lucky to escape harm
A routine inspection alerted a worker to the damage, who called police. Bond was arrested on site. PC Mark Aldridge of Staffordshire Police warned: “Fellow residents could have suffered serious or even fatal injuries because of Bond’s actions.”
“Thankfully, the fire stayed small and went out on its own,” he added, praising the sentencing as a warning to others who might use fire to cause harm. “Arson is a grave threat to communities and won’t be tolerated.”
Firefighters join forces with cops to catch culprit
Leigh Richards, Fire Investigation Lead at Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service, said: “We’re glad to see justice done. Our fire investigators worked closely with Staffordshire Police to prove the fire was deliberately started and helped bring Bond to account.”
