Family Feud Ends in Fatal Stabbing: Jerome Bailey Jailed for Life
Jerome Bailey, 40, from Teddington, was handed a life sentence with a minimum of 18 years for the murder of his cousin, Tesfa Campbell. The grim verdict came down at Croydon Crown Court on Friday, 1 April.
Brutal Attack Caught on CCTV
The court heard Bailey fatally stabbed 40-year-old Tesfa Campbell in the abdomen on 3 July 2019 in Battersea. The chilling footage showed the two men walking together two minutes before the attack, with Mr Campbell carrying a bright yellow drawstring bag. After the stabbing, Bailey was seen leaving the scene with the distinctive bag.
Despite desperate efforts from the public and emergency services, Mr Campbell later died in hospital. Police swiftly launched a murder investigation and used CCTV to identify Bailey as the killer.
Arrest and Evidence
Bailey was arrested four days later at his Teddington home. Officers found two identical yellow bags in the garden, one containing an Oyster card Bailey used for his journey to Battersea. The evidence cemented his guilt.
Family Ties Turn Deadly
Before the murder, the cousins were close, with Tesfa often supporting Bailey financially. But tensions had risen, with Tesfa recently telling family he planned to cut Bailey off.
Detective Chief Inspector Brian Howie said: “I am pleased that Jerome Bailey has finally been sentenced for this horrific attack on Tesfa Campbell. “The delays in concluding this case have extended the pain that Tesfa’s family and friends have had to endure but I can only hope that this 18-year prison sentence helps them all in some way. > Bailey has never confirmed why this meeting between the two cousins ended with Tesfa losing his life at the hands of another family member. However, it is clear that Bailey’s violent attack had devastating consequences which will continue to have an impact on many people’s lives for years to come.”
