Football Fan Banned for Homophobic Chanting at Brighton vs Arsenal Match
Luke Reece, 20, was kicked out and slapped with a three-year Football Banning Order after hurling homophobic abuse during the Brighton and Arsenal clash last October.
Stewards Spot Abuse, Reece Escorted Out
Stewards noticed Reece’s offensive behaviour in the away section during the October 2 game. He tried to hide but was caught at half-time in the concourse and removed from the stadium.
Club staff promptly alerted police. Reece, from Lonsdale Avenue, Romford, was arrested under the Public Order Act for using threatening and abusive behaviour likely to cause distress.
Charged and Fined for Homophobic Chanting
He later faced charges under the Football Offences Act for indecent or racial chanting, aggravated by homophobia. At Brighton Magistrates’ Court on April 5, Reece admitted the offence.
He was fined £106, ordered to pay £85 court costs and a £34 victim surcharge.
Three-Year Football Banning Order Imposed
- Reece banned from all football matches nationwide for three years.
- He cannot attend Arsenal games home or away.
- Must stay outside any towns where Arsenal play for four hours before and after matches.
- Banned from being within two miles of England men’s fixtures four hours before and after games.
- Required to report to a nominated police station before England matches abroad.
Authorities Condemn Homophobia in Football
“Homophobia has been a continuing theme I have encountered during my 23 years of service at football events,” said PC Darren Balkham of Sussex Police.
“A minority of fans wrongly see this abuse as ‘banter.’ But attitudes are shifting and such behaviour is being challenged.”
“Brighton & Hove Albion and the FA both have strong policies to combat homophobic chanting.”
A club spokesperson added: “We have zero tolerance on all abuse and worked closely with police to prosecute the offender. He faces an indefinite ban from the Amex.”
District crown prosecutor Richard Dawes said: “There is no room for homophobia in society. Brighton is known for its inclusive culture, and behaviour like this will not be tolerated.”
This case sends a clear message: homophobic chanting will not be tolerated at football grounds across the UK.
