Traffic Chaos Averted: Roundhill Tunnel Closed Due to Dover Port’s Operation TAP
The Roundhill Tunnel has been shut to stop nasty tailbacks caused by the Port of Dover’s new traffic plan, Operation TAP.
What is Operation TAP?
Dover’s Operation TAP is a temporary system that queues lorries heading to the port in the left-hand lane of the A20 just after the Roundhill Tunnel. The aim? To keep Dover itself free of grinding traffic jams and improve air quality.
Stationary lorries won’t be clogging up the town even when the port slows down. Plus, all vehicles coming into Dover from the west along the A20 must now stick to a 40mph speed limit.
Follow The Diversion: How to Beat the Roadworks
National Highways has teams on site to manage the traffic. If you’re driving, keep an eye out for the diversion signs marked with a hollow black circle. Here’s the quickest alternative route:
- Exit the M20 at Junction 13 and join the A259 Churchill Avenue.
- Head east until you reach the A260 Canterbury Road roundabout.
- Take the first exit off the A260, heading north.
- At the Spitfire Way roundabout, take the third exit onto the A20 coastbound.
