Sussex Police Clear Officer Over Bus Arrest Drama

Sussex Police have backed their officer after a heated bus arrest sparked fury online. The force ruled the officer’s actions “reasonable and proportionate” to the risk at the time. No misconduct proceedings will be launched.

What Really Went Down on the Bus?

Officers were called after a man got abusive to passengers and refused to leave a bus on July 16. When police moved in to detain him, a video showing part of the scuffle hit social media, stirring up controversy.

The man was arrested, charged with assaulting an emergency worker and using threatening or abusive behaviour. He was bailed and is set to return to court on August 15.

Police Review: Full Footage Speaks Volumes

Sussex Police’s Professional Standards Department reviewed the viral clip alongside the full CCTV bus footage, officers’ bodycams, witness statements, and the officer’s official use-of-force report.

“We strive to learn from every interaction and have shared this incident with our Independent Advisory Group to better understand public perception of use of force techniques,” a spokesperson said.

East Sussex Chief: Social Media Video Doesn’t Tell Full Story

East Sussex Division Superintendent Till Sanderson urged caution over viral videos. He said such clips rarely show the full events that led to an arrest.

“Police officers are highly trained in the use of force and know any action must be reasonable and proportionate. Their conduct will always be scrutinised and accountability enforced where needed,” Sanderson said.
