Teen Jailed for Life over Fatal Knife Attack
A 15-year-old boy was sentenced to life imprisonment at the Old Bailey on Tuesday, 11 October. Due to his age, detention is “during His Majesty’s Pleasure” with a minimum term of 15 years to be served.
The youth, who was 14 when the offence occurred, was convicted on 8 July after a trial. He was also found guilty of possession of an offensive weapon.
Tragic Stabbing Outside Block of Flats
Police were called to a disturbance at 1 Terrace at 6.20pm on a Monday evening. Officers found 45-year-old James Markham seriously injured in a shed area behind the flats where he lived. Despite first aid from officers, paramedics, and members of the public, James died at the scene.
James, a stonemason, had returned home shortly before 6pm and became involved in a verbal row with a group of local youths known for anti-social behaviour in the area.
Deadly Clash Over Anti-Social Behaviour
James reportedly tried to scare off the group with a drill bit. One teenager, armed with a knife, attacked him. James suffered three stab wounds—through his back, armpit, and chest—with the chest wound piercing his lung and proving fatal.
A bystander attempted to help James as the gang fled. His family rushed from their home in horror.
The 14-year-old suspect dropped his mobile phone while escaping and was quickly identified. He was arrested two days later on suspicion of murder but refused to comment during police questioning.
Detective’s Statement and Justice Served
“James was a loving family man who leaves behind a partner and three young children,” said Detective Inspector John Marriott.
“The teenager broke a Criminal Behaviour Order and should never have been in the area. The knife was never found, suggesting he tried to cover his tracks. However, witness testimony, CCTV, and forensic evidence proved his guilt beyond doubt.
“He will now spend a substantial amount of time behind bars. I thank my team for their skill in securing justice for James’s family. My thoughts are with them.”
