Surfers and Coastguard Rescue Two Cut Off by Tide at Seven Sisters
Second Coastguard Call-Out in Days
Birling Gap Coastguard rushed to the rescue for the second time on Tuesday after surfers spotted two people trapped by the incoming tide below the iconic Seven Sisters cliffs. The team had just stood down from a previous incident when the new call came through.
Surfers Step In Before Coastguard Arrive
Quick-thinking surfers helped guide the two stranded individuals to safety before handing them over to the arriving coastguard crew. However, one of the surfers lost their surfboard during the daring rescue.
Newhaven Lifeboat Briefly Deployed
Newhaven lifeboat was also paged at 2:05pm but was stood down shortly after leaving port as the situation came under control.
Warnings From the Coastguard
“Great respect to the surfers and hope you located your abandoned board! The two rescued were very grateful to the surfers and all involved,” Birling Gap Coastguard said.
The coastguard reminded everyone to always check tide times before walking under the cliffs – the tidal race can be dangerous.
