Brutal Murder Shakes Cumbria: Six Sentenced for River Caldew Killing
The body of Lee McKnight was found submerged in the River Caldew in the early hours of Friday, 24 July 2020. He had suffered multiple injuries before his death in a savage attack.
Massive Investigation Leads to Murder Convictions
Police launched one of the largest homicide investigations the county has seen in recent years. Officers and staff worked tirelessly to uncover the truth and bring those responsible to justice.
After painstaking detective work, six offenders were charged with Mr McKnight’s murder. All six were convicted and handed life sentences, with minimum terms ranging from 13 to 30 years behind bars.
Detective Chief Superintendent Praises Hard Work
“Mr McKnight was subjected to a brutal, premeditated attack before he was thrown into the river to drown,” said Detective Chief Superintendent Stalker.
“Gathering the evidence was complicated, but the professionalism of the investigation led to convictions for all six defendants.
“The thoroughness of the police work deserves recognition — several officers received commendations from the judge.”
