Deadly Feline Virus Ravages Cyprus Cats: UK on High Alert

A devastating outbreak of feline coronavirus in Cyprus has wiped out around 300,000 cats, sparking fears the deadly virus could soon reach the UK. Experts warn that if the fatal feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) spreads here, it could spell disaster for Britain’s beloved cats.

Cyprus Cats Hit Hard by FIP

The outbreak has hit both domestic and stray cats on the island since January, says Dinos Ayiomamitis, head of Cats PAWS Cyprus. Close ties between Cyprus and the UK—including frequent expat travel and cat rehoming—raise the risk of the virus crossing borders.

FIP is caused by the feline coronavirus (FCoV), a highly contagious bug spread through cat faeces. While many infected cats show no symptoms or mild diarrhoea, the virus can mutate into FIP, a nearly always fatal condition. Cats packed in catteries and rescue centres are at greatest risk, with grooming tools, litter scoops, and even human contact spreading the virus.

Signs and Severity of FIP

  • Wet FIP: Fluid builds up in chest or abdomen, causing swelling, lethargy, and loss of appetite.
  • Dry FIP: Poor appetite, high fever, and vision problems.

Kittens and young cats aged three months to two years are most vulnerable. The outbreak in Cyprus is especially severe, with 40-50% of infected cats developing FIP—far above the usual 1%.

UK on Guard: Expert Warnings and Precautions

British vets stress the danger posed by travel and cat imports from affected areas. Strict screening should be mandatory for cats leaving Cyprus to stop the virus reaching the UK. Blood tests for FCoV antibodies are crucial, and any cats showing symptoms must be barred from travel.

Good news for pet owners: feline coronavirus cannot infect humans, so there’s no risk of FIP jumping from cats to people.

New Treatments Offer Hope

Most cats with FIP face euthanasia due to lack of effective treatments. But recent advances like remdesivir injections and the oral drug GS-441524 show promise and are now available in the UK—although sadly not yet in Cyprus.

The Cyprus outbreak is a wake-up call for UK cat owners and vets. Vigilance, strict checks, and swift treatment are vital to protect our feline friends from this deadly threat.
