Amnesty Exposes Grisly War Crimes in Sudan’s Civil War

The brutal conflict in Sudan is spiralling out of control, with Amnesty International blasting both sides for war crimes that are wrecking civilian lives. Their latest report, ‘Death Came To Our Home’: War Crimes and Civilian Suffering in Sudan, reveals horrific attacks by the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

Tens of Thousands Dead, Millions Displaced

Fighting that erupted in April has left thousands dead and forced 3.3 million people from their homes. Civilians are being deliberately targeted and caught in indiscriminate crossfire. Homes, hospitals, and even churches are being bombed, while desperate residents risk their lives just to find food, water, and medicine.

Agnès Callamard, Amnesty’s secretary-general, slammed the reckless clash for power between Generals Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, aka Hemedti. “People are being shot inside their homes,” she warned.

Sexual Violence and Ethnic Cleansing Horror

The report details terrifying acts of sexual violence against women and girls, including children as young as 12. Many survivors say RSF fighters and allied Arab militias were behind the attacks. Amnesty also uncovered mass graves, especially in West Darfur, signalling ethnic cleansing aimed at the non-Arab Masalit community.

“This echoes past scorched-earth massacres,” the report notes, confirming a deadly ethnic conflict alongside the broader war.

Both Sides Deny War Crime Allegations as Crisis Deepens

The SAF and RSF rejected Amnesty’s damning findings and pointed fingers at each other. Both claim they are following international law amid mounting evidence of atrocities.

Amnesty is urging the international community to ramp up humanitarian aid and calls on neighbouring countries to open their borders to refugees seeking safety. It also demands the UN Security Council expand its arms embargo from Darfur to cover all of Sudan.

The Sudanese nightmare shows no sign of ending anytime soon.
