Robbery gang jailed for up to 19 years after terrorising Lancashire shops

Four men caught in daring raids across Leyland, Preston and Warrington

Four men have been locked up for between seven and 19 years after a string of masked robberies rocked Lancashire stores. The gang targeted Co-op and Spar shops in Leyland, Preston, Chorley, and Warrington from November 2021 to April this year.

Wearing balaclavas and armed with weapons, the robbers threatened shop staff before making off with at least £10,000 each time. Innocent employees were left terrified and traumatised.

Major police probe leads to crack down during Operation Calibre

The daring raids sparked a major investigation, culminating in the arrests and charges of the four suspects. At Preston Crown Court this week, the men received hefty sentences:

  • Daniel Lewis, 19 years – pleaded guilty to seven robberies
  • Daniel Holding, 15 years – pleaded guilty to six robberies
  • Anthony Heaton, 13 years – pleaded guilty to five robberies
  • Matthew Lowe, 7 years – pleaded guilty to two robberies

Detective Inspector Denise Fardella, who led Operation Pintail, said: “The impact on staff cannot be overstated. These criminals targeted hardworking people just doing their jobs, leaving many shaken and distressed.”

Police vow tougher action on violent robbers

These convictions come as part of a week-long crackdown called Operation Calibre. Police are hunting some of the region’s most wanted robbery suspects and will release details soon.

Detective Supt Nick Connaughton warned: “Robbery leaves lasting trauma, especially when violence is involved. We will not tolerate this. We are working day and night to bring offenders to justice.”

He added that police will boost patrols in hotspots and urged the public to help catch criminals on the run.

Police and Crime Commissioner pledges to back crackdown

Andrew Snowden, Lancashire’s Police and Crime Commissioner, said: “Cracking down on burglary and robbery is a priority. These sentences prove we’re serious about keeping criminals off our streets and protecting our communities.”

He promised continued support for resources needed to fight crime and safeguard the public.
