Nice Bastille Day Attack: Driver Shot Dead as Court Sends Terror Network Behind Bars

Chaos on Nice Promenade

The driver who ploughed into crowds on Nice’s famous seaside promenade was shot dead by police at the scene. The horror unfolded on July 14th, Bastille Day, as crowds gathered to celebrate France’s national holiday.

Key Defendants Sentenced

The main defendant — a close friend of the driver — was found guilty of belonging to a terrorist organisation and slammed with an 18-year jail term. Two others were convicted of helping the attacker get weapons and the truck used in the massacre, receiving 18 and 12 years behind bars respectively.

Five more suspects, including one woman, picked up sentences ranging from two to eight years.

Controversy and Claims

Survivors slammed the court’s verdict, arguing defendants weren’t charged with directly taking part or aiding the attack itself. While three faced terror group membership charges, the other five were convicted of lesser offences like breaking gun laws.

The Islamic State quickly claimed the atrocity, but no proof emerged linking the attacker personally to the group.

Historic Terror Trials Close

This trial concludes a string of high-profile terror cases in France. Earlier this year the court wrapped up the 2015 Paris attacks trial, convicting all 20 defendants involved.

Both trials are now preserved as landmark rulings in France’s fight against terrorism. The verdicts may still face appeal.
