Salford Man Jailed for Christmas Day Fatal Crash

Nathaniel Ritchie, 34, from St Pauls Road, Salford, has been sentenced to three and a half years in prison. The sentence was handed down on Thursday 9 June at Chester Crown Court after Ritchie was found guilty of dangerous driving.

Speeding Audi Smash Kills Woman on A536

The court heard Ritchie was behind the wheel of an Audi RS5 on the A536 Macclesfield Road. After celebrating Christmas at home, he set out to buy soft drinks. Realising the shop was likely closed on Christmas Day, he turned around and headed for a petrol station in Congleton instead.

On his return, Ritchie sped around a left-hand bend and veered into the opposite carriageway. His car smashed into a white Volkswagen Up, driven by 46-year-old Lakshmi Basford from Rainow. Tragically, Lakshmi died at the scene.

Police and Family Demand Justice

Ritchie was arrested and charged with dangerous driving. Police Constable Nick Anderton, who led the investigation, said:

“Lakshmi’s family have waited over two years for justice after her tragic death. Christmas is for family and celebration – but Lakshmi’s loved ones will never have that again because of Ritchie’s reckless driving. The trial forced them to relive her final moments. I hope this sentence eases their pain, knowing he is now behind bars. Our thoughts remain with Lakshmi’s family as they cope with this devastating loss every day.”

Family Pay Emotional Tribute to Lakshmi

Present throughout the trial, Lakshmi’s family said: “No sentence can ever reflect the loss we continue to suffer.” They thanked the police, especially PC Anderton, PC Hilton (family liaison officer), and the prosecution team for their support and work toward justice.

Paying tribute, they added:

“Lakshmi was a beautiful, kind, and gentle lady with so many years to live. Our lives will never be the same, and we miss her greatly.”
