Mother-of-Two Dies After Brixton O2 Academy Crowd Crush
Rebecca Ikumelo, 33, tragically lost her life following a chaotic concert at Brixton’s O2 Academy on Thursday night (December 15). Around 3,000 people—many without tickets—stormed Nigerian star Asake’s show, sparking a deadly crush. Rebecca died early Saturday morning (December 17). Two other women, aged 21 and 23, remain in critical condition out of eight hospitalised.
Police Probe Underway Amid Shocking Social Media Footage
The Metropolitan Police are urgently investigating after the event spiralled out of control. They are sifting through distressing videos circulating online. So far, one woman has been arrested for assaulting an officer. Meanwhile, the police watchdog, the IOPC, is examining claims of police misconduct, including an officer apparently pushing a concertgoer. The Met insists there is no evidence of wrongdoing so far.
Rebecca’s Final Heartbreaking Video
Just one day before the tragedy, Rebecca posted a touching YouTube video titled MY KIDS BEDTIME ROUTINE | AUTISM AWARENESS. In the clip, she and her family don festive pyjamas and decorate a Christmas tree. The mother of two lovingly describes how she puts her children to bed. Three days earlier, she took her boys to meet Santa Claus—making the loss even more devastating.
Tributes Pour In from Fans, Friends, and Mayor
Nigerian artist Asake, whose gig was cut short amid the chaos, expressed his heartbreak: “I am devastated by the news that Rebecca Ikumelo, who was in critical condition since Thursday, has sadly passed away. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family at this difficult time. Please keep her family in our thoughts and prayers.”
“This photo was taken the day I last saw Rebecca,” said author Toni Tone. “She was a stunning woman who exuded positivity and was dedicated to being the best version of herself for her children. She was also a key figure in raising awareness of autism spectrum disorder. My thoughts are with her family.”
London Mayor Sadiq Khan called Rebecca’s death “heartbreaking” and sent condolences to her loved ones. Chief Superintendent Colin Wingrove appealed for witnesses to come forward, acknowledging the “upsetting images” circulating and stressing the ongoing nature of the investigation.
Scene of Horror: Thousands at Sold-Out Show
The packed show marked the finale of Asake’s UK tour. The O2 Academy Brixton, with a capacity of 4,921, was overwhelmed by an estimated 3,000 extra gatecrashers. Asake had warned fans not to attend without tickets, but the rules were ignored. Academy Music Group, operators of the venue, expressed deep sorrow and sympathy for Rebecca’s family and all affected by the tragedy.
