Twitter Bug Blocks Links and Images Across the Site
Twitter is facing a major glitch stopping users from leaving the site or viewing images. The social media giant’s latest tech hiccup comes hot on the heels of recent layoffs and an earlier outage.
Error Messages and Blank Blocks Plague Users
While Twitter itself stayed online, clicking on links led users to a long error message citing problems with Twitter’s API – the system that connects Twitter to other services.
- Links couldn’t be opened and appeared as empty coloured blocks.
- Tweetdeck, Twitter’s specialised tweet tracking app, also went blank at the same time.
API Changes May Have Broken Twitter’s Systems
Twitter has been shaking up its API recently to boost revenue, slashing free API support and killing many third-party apps and clients relying on it.
The company promised a new API “coming very soon” back on 26 February, sparking speculation the chaos might stem from its delayed rollout.
Twitter admitted huge interest in the new API but postponed its launch multiple times earlier this month, with vague updates hinting it would be ready “in the coming days.”
Broken Links Due to Unannounced API Shutdown?
Experts suggest Twitter may have cut API access without warning, breaking all linked services and causing outbound links to fail. This happens because Twitter routes all link clicks through its own servers first.
So far, Twitter has stayed silent on the issue. Since Elon Musk’s takeover, the company’s PR team has been gutted, leaving users in the dark.
Musk himself hasn’t acknowledged the bug publicly and was seen replying to tweets – including some with links – though it’s unclear if he’s facing the same issues.
