Man Dies After Police Restraint at Basildon Social Club

Scott Taylor tragically died following an incident at the Winston Social Club in Basildon’s Laindon district on August 12, 2022. Police were called after reports of a man “allegedly acting aggressively,” Essex coroner’s court revealed.

Cause of Death Linked to Cocaine and Restraint

The preliminary cause of death points to multi-organ failure and rhabdomyolysis. A secondary cause involved complications from cocaine use combined with physical exertion and prone restraint, according to the inquest.

Police Self-Refer to Watchdog Over Incident

Essex Police referred themselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC) after the incident. Officers transported Mr Taylor to Basildon University Hospital due to a delay in securing an ambulance.

IOPC inspectors stated:

“Our investigation will examine the officers’ use of force, including the use of handcuffs and leg restraints; the duty of care provided, especially regarding mental health; and the decision to transport him in a police vehicle.”

Inquest Begins, Adjourned for Further Investigation

The inquest opened at Chelmsford Crown Court on Monday, hearing that Mr Taylor was initially restrained by staff at the social club before police arrived. The hearing has been adjourned to a later date as the investigation continues.
