Iconic Midhurst Pub The Angel Inn Reduced to Ashes in Early Morning Blaze
The Angel Inn, a beloved pub and hotel on North Street, Midhurst, was gutted by a devastating fire in the early hours of March 18. The flames destroyed a historic landmark that served the town for generations, leaving owners and staff heartbroken.
Ukrainian Families Escape Safely Amid Tragedy
In a heartfelt social media statement, the owners thanked the community for overwhelming support. Most importantly, they revealed that all the Ukrainian families living at The Angel Inn escaped unharmed. “Words cannot begin to describe the relief that all our dear Ukrainian families escaped safely,” the owners said. “They now face the terrible challenge of rebuilding their lives once again.”
They added, “Witnessing our beloved hotel burn down before our eyes has caused incredible heartache to our family.”
Local Heroes and Neighbours Step Up to Help
The Angel Inn was more than just a building – it was a livelihood for many. The owners expressed gratitude to emergency services battling the inferno and to Lime and Spice, a nearby restaurant that opened its doors to shelter affected families.
“We are still in shock but working with emergency services to bring Midhurst back to normal,” the statement said. “Please bear with us as we begin the enormous task of piecing back our lives.”
Road Closure & Safety Checks Underway
West Sussex County Council confirmed that for safety reasons, the A286 North Street remains closed to vehicles right outside The Angel Inn. However, local shops unaffected by the fire, the nearby car park, and the western footway for pedestrians remain open.
Chichester District Council’s Building Control team is now assessing the pub’s structural integrity, to see if the front facade can be saved and when the road might reopen.
