Terri White Exposes Britain’s Failing School System in New Podcast

Lockdown didn’t just shut schools—it revealed shocking cracks in the system meant to protect Britain’s most vulnerable children. Exactly three years on from the UK’s pandemic school closures, Terri White digs deep in her eye-opening five-part series, Terri White: Finding Britain’s Ghost Children.

A Personal Mission with a Hard-Hitting Punch

Hosted by journalist and former Empire magazine editor Terri White, who is a survivor of child abuse, this series follows her nationwide investigation into the mystery of children missing from schools. Along the way, Terri reunites with her old primary school teacher and visits a head teacher who fights tooth and nail to bring pupils back through the door.

“This podcast is a collision of my personal experience and my journalism,” Terri said. “I know just how important school can be to keeping kids safe. After hearing about children missing from school post-pandemic, especially following the tragic death of Arthur, I knew this had to be probed.”

Terri’s Harrowing Past Fuels the Fight

Terri opens up about a troubled childhood marked by abuse. Growing up in a council house near Chesterfield, her life was marred by violence and trauma.

“I was sexually abused around five by one of my mum’s partners. We ended up in a women’s refuge a few years later. Education was my lifeline—it was the only path to independence and safety,” she revealed.

Listeners can expect heartfelt moments as Terri visits her old teacher, Mrs Webley, who helped her through those dark times. “School was my safe haven where I could do good work and dream of a better, stable life,” Terri says.

Remembering Arthur Labinjo-Hughes: A Heartbreaking Reminder

The show’s emotional core comes from Bernie, cousin to tragic Arthur Labinjo-Hughes, a boy taken too soon. Bernie breaks down how Arthur was a “happy, sociable boy” who always included others.

“He was a walking angel. What hurts me most is knowing how long he suffered, what he felt, and how broken he must’ve been. We mustn’t let this happen to other children.”

BBC Radio 5 Live Backs the Raw Truth

BBC Radio 5 Live’s Head of News Jonathan Crawford says the podcast pulls together Terri’s past with urgent social issues. “The common thread? Getting children back to school is vital,” he explains.

The series kicks off on Wednesday, 22 March on BBC Sounds, with coverage and a live debate featuring experts and decision makers to push for change.
