DVSA Staff Set to Strike in April—What It Means for Your MOTs and Vehicle Tests

Some DVSA staff who are PCS union members are gearing up for strike action this April 2023. The walkout will hit vehicle standards assessors, specialist vehicle standards assessors, traffic examiners, and vehicle examiners.

The strike is part of a nationwide PCS campaign over pay, pensions, job security, and redundancy terms.

When and Where the Strike Hits

The industrial action will hit different parts of Great Britain at different times throughout April. Exact dates vary depending on your location and the staff involved.

MOTs for Cars, Vans & Motorcycles Unaffected

Good news—MOT tests for cars, vans, and motorcycles will continue as normal during the strike.

What This Means for MOT Testers

If you have an MOT demonstration test booked during the strike dates, you should attend unless DVSA contacts you directly to cancel.

Not all vehicle examiners are part of the PCS union, and some may not strike. If your demonstration test can’t go ahead, DVSA will automatically rearrange it for you.

HGV, Bus, and Trailer MOTs: Still on, But With a Caution

MOT appointments for HGVs, buses, and trailers should go ahead as planned, despite the strikes.

DVSA doesn’t expect major disruption but only time will tell once the walkout starts.

If your MOT is affected, you’ll need to rebook at another MOT centre.

If you can’t secure a new booking and your MOT expires this month or already has, make sure to report it to DVSA.

If You Manage an Authorised Testing Facility (ATF)

If a vehicle standards assessor is more than 15 minutes late for their appointment, contact your network business manager immediately.

Vehicle Approval Tests—Proceed As Usual

Vehicle approval test appointments should carry on as planned unless DVSA contacts you to cancel.

As with other roles, not all specialist vehicle standards assessors belong to the PCS union or will strike.

If your vehicle approval test can’t happen due to strike action, DVSA will automatically rebook it and send you new details—no need to get in touch.
