UK Powers Ahead with £205 Million Green Energy Boost
Britain is charging full steam ahead with clean, affordable, home-grown energy. The UK government has unveiled a whopping £205 million fund for its latest renewables contract auction, aiming to supercharge energy security, grow the economy, and power millions of British homes with British energy.
Big Bucks for Britain’s Low-Carbon Future
The Contracts for Difference (CfD) scheme is the government’s main weapon for backing new low-carbon electricity projects. So far, it’s awarded contracts for nearly 27GW of capacity, accelerating the shift to cleaner, home-grown energy.
Last round alone secured almost 11GW – enough to power 12 million homes. The new £205 million pot for Round 5 marks the first annual CfD auction, guaranteeing steady support for green industry and jobs every year.
- £170 million earmarked for proven technologies like offshore wind.
- £10 million reserved exclusively for tidal stream power, unlocking a fresh wave of green energy.
Green Jobs and Cheaper Bills on the Horizon
This clean energy push means more green jobs and economic growth. Since 2020, billions of private investment and 68,000 green jobs have been created. The competitive CfD auctions have driven down costs, making solar and wind the cheapest electricity sources in the UK.
Energy Security Minister Graham Stuart said:
“Our flagship Contracts for Difference scheme is already delivering clean, homegrown energy as well as growing a green economy with green jobs.”
“Today’s budget announcement, the move to annual auctions and continued investment in renewable energy will limit the impact of events like Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine and drive our priority for Britain to have some of the cheapest wholesale electricity prices in Europe.”
“I’m excited to see the opportunities that will open for Britain’s world-class renewable industries as annual auctions kick off this year.”
Scotland, Wales and Offshore Wind Lead the Charge
Across the UK, renewables are booming. Scotland has bagged contracts for 52 projects, nearly a third of all CfD projects. Wales has secured nine contracts, totalling 260MW.
Offshore wind remains the crown jewel, with the UK boasting Europe’s largest operational fleet and the world’s four biggest windfarms. Ambitions for 50GW by 2030 include 5GW of floating offshore wind, enough energy to power every UK home.
This all ties into the government’s bigger green push, including a massive £20 billion investment in carbon capture and backing for the first nuclear project in 40 years at Sizewell C.
Neil McDermott, CEO of the Low Carbon Contracts Company, said:
“We welcome the announcement from the government on CfD Allocation Round 5. We look forward to working with investors and generators for these important projects as we continue the journey to Net Zero.”
