Jermain Defoe Condemns Disgraceful Mockery Of Bradley Lowery’s Memory

Former Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe expressed his shock and sadness as a Sheffield Wednesday supporter, Dale Houghton, mocked the late Bradley Lowery during a match. Houghton, 31, admitted to a public order offence in Sheffield magistrates’ court on Monday after taunting opposition fans with an image of the six-year-old cancer victim.

Defoe, who formed a close bond with Bradley Lowery, referred to the young boy as his “best mate.” Bradley lost his battle with neuroblastoma in 2017 at the age of six. Defoe condemned Houghton’s actions and called Bradley “one of the most inspirational children this world has ever seen.

In response to Houghton’s actions, Sheffield Wednesday fans initiated a fundraiser, collecting over £22,500 for the Bradley Lowery Foundation. Leanne Wood, from Sheffield Wednesday Women’s Supporters’ Group, organised the appeal, expressing her disgust at Houghton’s behavior.

Defoe urged the public to support Bradley’s parents, Gemma and Carl, emphasising the incredible work they do through the Bradley Lowery Foundation. The Foundation continues to make a positive impact, despite the distress caused by Houghton’s actions.

Bradley’s mother described Houghton’s actions as “unforgivable” and “really upsetting” for the family. The overwhelming support from the community is seen as a testament to Bradley’s enduring impact.

Houghton is scheduled to be sentenced on November 17, facing a potential jail term for his disgraceful conduct during the football match.
