Kitchen Chaos: Fire Blamed on Tot’s Hob Mischief in Chichester
Firefighters Warn: Keep Hobs Clear and Smoke Alarms On
West Sussex Fire Service is sounding the alarm after a recent kitchen blaze in Chichester. They urge homeowners to keep kitchen hobs clutter-free and ensure smoke alarms are fitted and working.
Small Fire, Big Risk
On February 14th, fire crews rushed to a fire alert on Richmond Road where a kitchen fire had broken out. Smoke thickened the air as firefighters tackled a blaze sparked by a hob. Thankfully, the fire stayed contained thanks to closed kitchen doors.
Firefighters revealed the fire started when a young child accidentally switched the hob on, igniting an air fryer sitting on top.
Safety First: No Injuries But Lessons Learned
Thanks to quick evacuation, nobody was hurt. Fire crews visited surrounding homes afterward to offer fire safety tips and check residents’ wellbeing.
“Fires, especially at night, pose huge risks,” said Station Manager Alastair Letchford. “Smoke alarms save lives by giving early warning to get out safely.”
He added that more than half of accidental house fires start in the kitchen. His advice? Evacuate immediately if a fire breaks out and call emergency services without hesitation.
