Travelodge Car Park Attempted Rapist Jailed for Six Years

Rajenthiram Mithinraj, 34, from Bromley Road in Beckenham, has been sentenced to six years in prison for attempting to rape a woman in a Travelodge car park in South Croydon.

The incident occurred on October 11 last year when Mithinraj, a delivery driver, and his friends were drinking in the car park. The victim, who was highly intoxicated, engaged with Mithinraj, ultimately leading to the attempted rape.

Before the assault, the Travelodge receptionist had notified the police about the disruptive behaviour of Mithinraj’s group, but officers were unable to respond promptly due to high demand.

While Mithinraj’s friend was acquitted of rape, the jury found Mithinraj guilty of attempted rape. Judge Clair Harden-Frost emphasized that the victim was incapable of consenting, underscoring Mithinraj’s awareness of her vulnerable state.

CCTV footage revealed Mithinraj’s intent to engage in sexual activity with the victim despite her obvious intoxication.

During sentencing at Croydon Crown Court, the impact of the assault on the victim was articulated by the prosecution. The victim expressed profound psychological distress, feeling scared to go out alone and experiencing humiliation and embarrassment. Her mental health has significantly deteriorated, leading to suicidal thoughts and a loss of enjoyment in daily activities.

In his defense, Mithinraj’s lawyer, Laura Blackband, highlighted his previously law-abiding life and religious observance. However, the judge emphasized the gravity of the offence, stating that the victim’s inability to consent was indisputable.

Mithinraj, originally from Sri Lanka, received a six-year prison sentence. The judge expressed hope that he would not be returned to Sri Lanka upon release due to the current unrest in the country.

The case underscores the severity of sexual assault crimes and the lasting impact on victims’ lives, while also emphasizing the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
