STEC O145 Outbreak Hits 256 in UK with 45 New Cases

The UK has confirmed 256 cases of the STEC O145 bacterial outbreak as of June 18. Forty-five fresh infections were reported recently, though all patients showed symptoms before May 31. While the rise in cases is slowing, health experts warn more may surface as NHS labs refer samples for detailed genomic checks.

Case Numbers by Nation

  • England: 168 cases
  • Scotland: 56 cases
  • Wales: 29 cases
  • Northern Ireland: 3 cases (likely infected in England)

Hospital admissions are worryingly high. Data from 227 cases show that 38% required hospital treatment.

Pre-Packaged Sandwich Lettuce Linked to Outbreak

Investigators have zeroed in on pre-packaged sandwiches containing lettuce as the probable source. Both the Food Standards Agency (FSA) and Food Standards Scotland (FSS) have issued product recalls as a precaution. Teams continue to run genome sequencing and track the food chain to confirm the cause.

Health Warning: Know the Symptoms & Stay Safe

Dr Colin Brown, UKHSA Incident Director, stresses recognising severe symptoms like bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and fever. To stop spread, follow these top tips:

  1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
  2. Disinfect surfaces regularly using proper cleaning products.
  3. Don’t prepare food for others if you’re feeling unwell.
  4. Avoid visiting hospitals and care homes to reduce infection risk.
  5. Wait 48 hours after symptoms end before returning to work, school, or nursery.

The outbreak remains under close watch as authorities dig deeper. Stay alert and keep hygiene top priority.
