Pennsylvania Couple Drown in Florida Rip Current Tragedy
A Pennsylvania family holiday turned fatal when a couple drowned in a deadly rip current at a Florida beach. Brian Warter, 51, and Erica Wishard, 48, were swimming with their six children on Hutchinson Island, Martin County, when disaster struck.
Ignoring Red Flags Proves Deadly
The family was swimming outside a lifeguard-patrolled area despite red flags warning of dangerous conditions. Located an hour north of West Palm Beach, Hutchinson Island’s powerful 4-to-6-foot waves and strong rip currents pulled the couple and several teens out to sea.
“We had very strong surf… swimmers jumped directly into a rip current and immediately got pulled out to sea,” Martin County Ocean Rescue Chief Ian Montgelas told weather.com.
Lifeguards rushed to the scene, pulling Erica Wishard from the water. Despite CPR and rescue efforts, both Brian and Erica were pronounced dead at a hospital. Two teenagers were also caught but managed to escape the deadly current.
Deadly Rip Currents: A Growing Threat
The tragedy unfolded as a low-pressure system off the Southeast coast churned up high surf. Senior meteorologist Dina Knightly described how rip currents form when piled-up coastal water rushes back out in narrow channels, sweeping swimmers away.
“These are strong currents that not even an Olympic swimmer can overcome,” Knightly said. She urges swimmers caught in rip currents to swim parallel to shore rather than against the flow.
Stay Safe: Lifeguards and Warnings Are Vital

- Check local surf zone forecasts before entering the water.
- If caught in a rip current, stay calm and signal for help if you can’t swim out.
The National Weather Service reports 11 rip current deaths in the US this year alone, with 91 fatalities recorded last year. This tragedy serves as a stark reminder of the hidden dangers lurking beneath coastal waves.
“Above all else, if you go in the water, make sure it’s where lifeguards are on duty,” Montgelas stressed.
