Human Remains Found in Suitcases at Bristol’s Clifton Suspension Bridge
Police in Bristol have launched a manhunt after human remains were discovered in two suitcases left near the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge. Officers were alerted to reports of a suspicious man acting oddly on the bridge just before midnight on Wednesday.
Suspect Flees After Leaving Suitcases
Avon and Somerset Police arrived within ten minutes but found the man had vanished, leaving one suitcase behind. A second suitcase was found nearby shortly after. The discovery has sparked a major investigation.
Police Launch Major Investigation
Acting Bristol Commander Vicks Hayward-Melen called the incident “very disturbing” and stressed the urgent need to find the suspect and identify the remains. “I fully recognise the concern this will cause our communities,” she stated.
Police searches are ongoing with support from the National Police Air Service and HM Coastguard. Forensic teams have set up a large cordon around the scene as they carry out detailed investigations.
Bridge Closed Amid Police Activity
The Clifton Suspension Bridge and its nearby visitor centre have been closed to all traffic and pedestrians due to the police operation. A social media message from the bridge warned of disruption and confirmed the closure throughout the day on 11th July.
Commander Hayward-Melen reassured the public that the major crime team is leading the probe with specialist officers involved. “Our immediate priority is to locate the man who left the suitcases, identify the deceased, and inform their next of kin. Specialist officers are ready to offer support to the family,” she said.
Forensic investigators are examining the bridge and surrounding areas, with a post-mortem planned later. An increased police presence remains on site, and residents are urged to report any concerns to officers.
