Sheerness Constables Arrest Man in Fight Against Retail Crime

Sheerness constables have made a significant breakthrough in their ongoing efforts to combat retail crime with the arrest of a man suspected of multiple shoplifting offences.

Between Friday, 19 July, and Thursday, 1 August 2024, Kent Police received several reports of thefts from various shops in Sheerness, including Boots the Chemist, Iceland, and the Co-op. Items stolen included food, laundry supplies, and cosmetics valued at more than £450. Investigations into these incidents were promptly initiated, with officers meticulously examining CCTV footage.

On 1 August, patrols were dispatched to the Co-op following reports of a man allegedly assaulting a member of staff after failing to pay for a quantity of meat. Officers arrived on the scene and arrested the suspect, who was then taken into custody.

William Harris, 54, of The Broadway, Sheerness, has been charged with assault and eight counts of theft. He appeared before Medway Magistrates’ Court the following day and was remanded for a further hearing at the same court on Friday, 9 August.

This arrest marks a significant step in addressing the issue of retail theft in the community, and Kent Police remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of local businesses and residents.
