Romney Marsh Men Hit with £1,600 Fine for Badger Sett Damage
Two men from Romney Marsh have been slapped with a total £1,600 fine after Kent Police’s Rural Task Force uncovered illegal interference with an active badger sett during land clearance.

The offence happened on Sunday, January 22, 2023, near Brookland. Kent Police responded to reports that badger setts were being disturbed. Their investigation confirmed that the setts had been dug out without a required Natural England licence or ecological assessment. Officers also found wildlife deterrent devices aimed at the sett entrances – a clear attempt to harass the badgers.
Fines and Court Convictions
Following interviews, the duo were charged under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992. On Wednesday, September 11, 2024, both men were convicted at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court. Each was hit with an £800 fine and ordered to pay £650 court costs each, totalling £1,600 combined.
“The law to protect badgers is in place for a good reason and we are committed to enforcing that law to protect the species. The scene of this incident showed the impact the groundwork had on the badger sett, and it was right that these two men were held responsible for their actions,” said Sergeant Darren Walshaw.
Rural Task Force Cracks Down on Wildlife Crimes
Kent’s Rural Task Force, which tackles wildlife crime across the county, continues to fight against offences like badger sett interference, hare coursing, fish theft, and dog welfare violations. They work closely with Environment Agency, Angling Trust, and the RSPCA to protect Kent’s wildlife.
