A mass shooting late last night in Birmingham, Alabama has tragically claimed the lives of four people, with 17 more left wounded. The incident, which police believe involved multiple shooters, occurred in the popular Five Points South district, a vibrant area known for its dining and nightlife, just after 11 p.m. local time.
Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald provided details about the shooting, stating, “We believe that multiple shooters fired multiple shots on a group of people.” The severity of the attack was immediately clear, as first responders arrived to find three victims—two men and one woman—lying unresponsive on the street, having suffered fatal gunshot wounds. They were pronounced dead at the scene, and a fourth victim passed away after being transported to a nearby hospital.
The wounded, totalling 17, were rushed to hospitals with varying degrees of injury. At least four of them are said to be in critical condition, while others suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
At this time, no suspects have been arrested, and authorities are urging the public to come forward with any information that could assist in identifying those responsible for the attack. Federal agencies, including the FBI and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), have been brought in to assist local law enforcement with the investigation.
The Five Points South area is now under tight security as investigators piece together the events of the night. While the city grapples with this latest surge in gun violence, this incident adds to the growing number of mass shootings occurring across the U.S. in 2024. According to the Gun Violence Archive, the nation has already seen over 400 mass shootings this year, with Birmingham now joining the growing list of affected communities.
Local officials have called for patience and cooperation from the public as they work to bring justice for the victims of this tragedy. More updates are expected as the investigation continues.
