HMP Manchester, commonly known as Strangeways, has announced a major crackdown to address severe drug and violence issues within the prison following a damning inspection report. The report by HM Inspectorate of Prisons described Strangeways as the “most violent” men’s prison in England and Wales, with drug use and assaults at “catastrophic levels.
The Prison Service has developed an action plan that includes installing new CCTV systems, netting to prevent drones from dropping contraband, a dedicated pest control strategy, and enhanced staff training.
Prisons and Probation Minister Lord Timpson, who recently visited the prison, stated that the inspection findings highlighted the “stark realities of the prison crisis” and described the report as “dire reading.
The inspection revealed high levels of drug trafficking, frequent weapon incidents, and numerous serious assaults. Conditions within the prison were labelled as “dilapidated,” with broken windows, unclean facilities, and infestations of rats “bigger than your hand,” as described by inmates recently released early to address overcrowding.
Lord Timpson expressed support for Strangeways staff, saying, “This action plan will ensure they have the support they need.” Key aspects of the plan include appointing specialist staff to identify and support vulnerable inmates at risk of self-harm and providing frontline officers with new training for managing violent offenders.
The prison is also implementing a robust pest control strategy and has formed a dedicated team to tackle urgent repairs. Additionally, a review of the prison’s education program is underway, with plans to redesign the curriculum to better support inmate rehabilitation.
Strangeways, built in the 1860s, faces mounting pressure to improve as it adapts to the evolving challenges of modern prison management, with both government and prison staff committed to restoring safety and stability within the institution.
