Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) has unveiled one of the UK’s first firefighting robots, a revolutionary addition designed to enhance firefighter safety and improve responses to high-risk incidents.

The cutting-edge robot will play a crucial role in tackling large-scale emergencies, such as industrial and commercial fires, where conditions can be hazardous. It offers advanced capabilities, including:
- Recording video for real-time situational awareness.
- Using thermal imaging to identify hotspots.
- Communicating with audio to give instructions and engage with people.
- Assisting in rescues with a stretcher attachment.
- Fighting fires with a powerful hose capable of spraying up to 2,000 litres of water per minute.
Boosting Safety and Efficiency
Mark, Group Manager at KFRS, highlighted the significance of the new technology:
“This is a really exciting addition for us. We’re always developing new tactics, and we want to have the best resources at incidents. This robot drives our service forward in our ability to help keep firefighters safe and to provide the best response we can.”
The robot aims to reduce risks to firefighters, minimise resources required at incidents, and decrease the time spent on the scene, making fire operations safer and more efficient.
Training Underway
KFRS’s Technical Rescue team has already undergone training on operating the robot, which is controlled remotely. Despite its immediate capabilities, the team believes the robot’s potential will grow as they explore its uses in real-life scenarios.
Carl, a Technical Rescue officer, drew parallels with the introduction of drones in firefighting:
“The robot can gather a range of intelligence that can then be fed back to the crews, who are a safe distance away. It’s like when we started flying drones in the service; we knew what they could do but not the extent of how they could be used. The robot will already bring so much to the service, but there’ll be lots more it can do!”

In the coming weeks, the robot will be deployed across Kent, providing support in tackling fires and protecting both firefighters and the community.
