Four University of Essex Students Killed in Horror High-Speed Crash
Four University of Essex students, including two standout basketball players, died in a devastating early-morning crash in Colchester. The tragic smash, suspected to be a high-speed collision, flattened a car and left the community reeling.
Victims Remembered as Bright Futures Cut Short
The victims – 22-year-old Makyle Bayley and Daljang Wol, 22, both Essex Rebels basketball players, alongside 21-year-old dancer Eva Darold-Tchikaya and Anthony Hibbert, 24 – were returning from a night out when the fatal crash occurred around 4:40 am on Saturday.
The car mounted the pavement and smashed into a local building, leaving the wreckage unrecognisable. All four were declared dead at the scene.
The Essex Rebels paid tribute on social media: “We are heartbroken by the loss of Makyle, Eva, Anthony, and Daljang. No words can express the incredible sadness felt across our family.”
University Vice Chancellor Maria Fasli said, “Their absence will be deeply felt. We are supporting their families and friends during this unimaginably difficult time.”
Tributes Pour In for Talented Students
A GoFundMe has been launched to support Makyle Bayley’s grieving family. The organiser called him “the most caring, pure soul; he lit up every room and was a true role model.”
Makyle’s dedication to basketball was widely admired, while Eva’s dance group mourned the loss of a “wonderful dancer, teammate, teacher, and Vice President.”
Police Investigate Crash, Seek Witnesses
The crash in Magdalen Street destroyed part of a building housing a secondhand shop and Thai massage parlour. Debris was scattered 50 yards away. Witnesses said the smash was so violent, the car was unidentifiable.
Essex Police confirmed no other vehicles were involved. Temporary Assistant Chief Constable Stuart Hooper thanked emergency teams and said, “We are tirelessly working to provide answers to the families.”
A moment of silence will be held across the basketball community to honour the four students.
Police urge anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage to come forward to assist their ongoing investigation.
The tragic deaths of Makyle, Eva, Anthony, and Daljang have left a lasting void in Essex’s hearts. Their talent, kindness, and promising futures will never be forgotten.
